Incorporate Rose into your Diet with these Simple Tips

Rose is a firm favourite amongst the Suti team. It is part of the ingredients list in a number of our products, including Honour and our Rose Facial Spritz. Our Rejuvenate oil also contains Rose Hip Seed oil rich in Vitamin C helping prevent and treat coughs, colds and flu.



The famous Sufi poet Rumi wrote: “Rose is sent to earth by the gardeners of paradise for empowering the mind, the eye and the spirit.”



Rose today is still used widely in cooking and as a medicinal remedy. In Greek mythology the Rose represents love, beauty, purity and passion. It is no co-incidence then that taken medicinally: it is beautifying, cleansing, uplifting and a powerful aphrodisiac.

In this post, we wanted to talk about the nutritional benefits of taking Rose internally by including it into your diet. Our nutritionist Nikki Hillis has put together some of these benefits and included some recipes for you to try at home.

Rich in Vitamin C

Fresh roses and rose hips (pods that contain the seeds of the rose plant) are rich in Vitamin C and therefore can help prevent and treat coughs, colds, flu, and Vitamin C deficiencies. The anti-inflammatory effects of Vitamin C can also help soothe sore throats and boost collagen production in the skin. Detoxing & Cooling

Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners used it for detoxing and cooling the body. Rose clears toxins and heat from the body and is a mild laxative preventing sluggishness and constipation. It cleanses the gall bladder, kidneys and liver - promoting bile flow. It helps to fight infection in the digestive tract and re-establish the normal bacterial population of the intestines. As a diuretic it is good for fluid retention and hastens the elimination of wastes through the kidneys to alleviate bladder infections.

Rose Smoothie

6 whole organic apples
Half a cup of frozen organic raspberries
1 tablespoon of Steenbergs Organic Rose Water

Blend all ingredients in a food processor and serve chilled.


Powerful Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

The antioxidants in rose create a powerful anti-inflammatory effect for the skin, digestive system and joints. Scientists studying adolescent women in Taiwan, in 2005, published their findings in The Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health. During this study they found that drinking rose tea over a period of six months led to less cramping during menstruation. This confirmed that Rose is rich in natural antioxidants. Rose petal tea can also be used to relieve uterine congestion causing pain and heavy periods.


Rose & Peppermint Tea

With this beautiful summer weather, the roses in our garden are finally blooming. So we have taken every opportunity to make a pot of fresh rose tea with the petals that are available. To make this refreshing tea:
  • Pour hot water over fresh rose petals, or if these are not available
  • (we like to use) Tea's Whole Rose Buds and fresh peppermint leaves in a teapot.
  • Leave this for a few minutes to allow the flavours to infuse.
  • Add raw honey to taste.


    Soothes nerves and Anti-depressant Properties

    Roses soothe nerves and are regarded as a mild sedative and anti-depressant. They are increasingly used in treatments for conditions of stress and nervous tension. They have an uplifting effect on the nervous system and can relieve insomnia, depression and fatigue. Clinical trials demonstrate that two varieties of the rose– damascena and R. centrifolia–also have powerful effects on brain function. Laboratory studies show that R. damascena, in particular, has impressive ability to inhibit the formation of amyloid-beta. These plaques appear to be a major cause of Alzheimer’s dementia. R. damascena also appears to support strong brain cell growth.


    Helpful for the Heart

    It is not a surprise as the rose comes from the same botanical family as Hawthorn (Rosaceae). Hawthorn has a long, proven history as a safe and effective remedy for early-stage heart failure.
